Engaku-ji Temple
Number 2 of the Kamakura Gozan.
Located just one minute’s walk from the station,
Engakuji Temple boasts some of Kita-Kamakura’s most famous autumn scenery.
The maple trees in front of the outer gate, or Somon, are said to be the earliest to change colors in Kamakura.
The Sanmon, or main gate, is the setting of the Natsume Soseki novel, The Gate,
and is seen as the gateway to the Butsuden, or main hall, which is a world of liberation from earthly desires and the woes of man.
This temple is famous for allowing visitors to enter the hojo room, the chief priest’s living quarters, and view its interiors and garden.
A visit to Engakuji Temple would not be complete without viewing
the powerful painting of a white dragon on the ceiling of the Butsuden.
