Hikawa Shrine
A 15m-high Myojin-style giant torii gate towers over the approach to Hikawa Shrine.
The shrine grounds are packed with trees over 500 years old, with the leaves of sacred zelkova trees rustling in the wind.
The history of Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine dates back to the 6th century, when the tumulus culture was first introduced to Japan. The shrine was said to have diverged from Omiya’s Hikawa Shrine, which has the title of Musashi Ichinomiya, during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. Affectionately called “O-Hikawa-sama,” this shrine has been worshipped as the head shrine of the area ever since Ota Dokan built Kawagoe Castle.
