World Heritage Site. Shimogamo-jinja Shrine was established before the Heian Period, making it one of Kyoto’s oldest Shinto shrines. It prays for success in national affairs and peace among people.
The shrine also holds traditional festivals such as the Aoi Matsuri (Hollyhock Festival) in May and the Mitarashi Festival held to drive away impurities on the Midsummer Day of the Ox in late July or early August. The Aoi Matsuri is even mentioned in the novel “Genji Monogatari” (Tale of Genji) and “The Pillow Book.” People also pray at the shrine to find a marriage partner.
