Temple founded by Hojo Yoshitoki (1163-1224), the second Hojo Shikken (regent),
who was instrumental in the consolidation of the Kamakura shogunate (1185-1333).
It is said that, before Minamoto no Yoritomo set out to restore his family to power, he shut himself away in Hojoji Temple’s Kannon Hall,
where the main object of worship was enshrined, for 100 days and prayed for continued luck in the fortunes of war.
After receiving a divine message in a dream at dawn of the final day, Yoritomo gathered his troops and succeeded in restoring the Minamoto clan to power.
