One of Japan’s top zoos, rich in nature. As of June 2013, the zoo exhibits and breeds 991 mammals, birds, reptiles, and other animals of 184 species. In recent years, the facility has been undergoing renovation under the concept of habitat environment exhibits that reproduce natural habitats as closely as possible to draw out animals’ natural behaviors and create a feel of the animals and viewers together as one. At the boundary with the Primeval Forests of Mt. Maruyama, a registered natural treasure, is a “zoo forest” of about two hectares that seeks to recreate the familiar nature of Sapporo from five decades ago.
