Shirahama Chuo Beach

Right in front of Shimoda Prince Hotel is Shirahama Chuo Beach, thenorthernmost swimming beach on the Shirahama coastline, selected as one of Japan’s 100 best swimming beaches.

Besides swimming in summer, there are many enjoyable ways to spend a holiday at the seaside, including watching the creatures in the rockpools, hiking along the shore, or even taking a gentle stroll along the beach.

The name, Shirahama, meaning “white beach,” comes from the sparkling white sands along this stretch of coast.

The sand is made up of volcanic ash and pumice ejected from submarine volcanoes that erupted about 2-10 million years ago, as well as fragments of shells that had lain on the ocean bed at the time of those eruptions.
