Kuzuharaoka Shrine
At the end of the Kamakura Period (1185-1333), Hino Toshimoto,
a central figure in Emperor Go-Daigo’s plot to overturn the Kamakura shogunate,
was arrested twice by the shogunate for political offenses.
A year after his death at Kuzuharaoka, Emperor Go-Daigo succeeded in overthrowing the shogunate.
Centuries later, Emperor Meiji, who was deeply impressed by Hino Toshimoto’s revolutionary spirit,
founded Kuzuharaoka Shrine, placing Hino as its main enshrined deity. Today, Kuzuharaoka Shrine attracts many visitors as a shrine to pray for a good match.
Genjiyama Park, where the shrine is located,
is famous for its cherry blossoms and has become Kamakura’s leading spot for blossom-viewing.
