Sasuke Inari Shrine

Sasuke Inari Shrine is located in a part of Kamakura known as a kakurezato (hidden village)
between Zeniarai Benten and the Kamakura Great Buddha.
While in exile on Hirugakojima Island in Izu,
Minamoto no Yoritomo was visited in a dream by an old man calling himself the Inari of the Kakurezato,
who encouraged him to raise an army against the Taira clan.
Yoritomo later joined forces with the samurai of the East and destroyed the Taira in 1185.
In 1192, having formed the Kamakura shogunate and elevated himself to the title of
‘Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force Against the Barbarians,
Minamoto no Yoritomo ordered his subordinates to search for the old shrine of the kakurezato, and there he rebuilt an Inari shrine.
Inspired by Minamoto no Yoritomo’s experiences, Sasuke Inari Shrine has become known as Shusse Inari,
where people go to pray for their own career advancement.
The many fox figurines of varying sizes scattered all around the shrine grounds are another charming feature of Sasuke Inari Shrine.
