Number 5 of the Kamakura Gozan.
Ishigama Garden Terrace, is a restaurant and bakery housed in a Western-style building
in the temple grounds that serves stone-baked bread and afternoon tea.
There is also a tea house where visitors can enjoy matcha green tea while gazing out at the karesansui Zen rock garden.
These features offer a different way of enjoying the temple compared to other temples.
Behind Jomyoji Temple is Kamatari Inari Shrine, which enshrines Fujiwara no Kamatari, who, since he was born,
carried a kind of spear known as a kamayari, which he had been given by a white fox.
When he was staying near this area as a young man, Kamatari saw a strange dream.
In his dream, an old man said to him,
‘I gave you the kamayari to protect you, but now that you have accomplished the Taika Reforms, return the kamayari to my land.’
When he awoke, the white fox appeared before him.
The legend has it that the fox guided him to a certain place, and there, Kamatari buried the kamayari.
This is one theory of the origins of the place name Kamakura.
