Number 1 of the Kamakura Gozan.
Built on land once known as Jigokudani, or “hell valley,” that is believed to have been an execution ground for criminals,
Kenchoji Temple is a Zen training monastery and the first temple to be described as a “Zen temple” in Japan.
Kenchoji’s grounds have been designated as an Historic Site of Japan.
It is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot,
and in spring, when the cherry trees that line the sando, or temple approach, are in full bloom, the path to the Sanmon,
or main gate, transforms into an archway of blossoms.
In autumn, you can enjoy the blazing reds and yellows of the fall foliage.
