The Kamakura Great Buddha, a giant outdoor statue of a sitting Buddha,
is the only statue of Buddha in Kamakura to be designated as a National Treasure.
Casting of the statue is believed to have started around 1252.
It was originally housed inside a large temple hall. The hall was destroyed by natural disasters and rebuilt multiple times over the years,
but ever since it was washed away by a massive tsunami in the Muromachi Period (1336-1573), the Great Buddha has sat in the open air.
For a separate fee, you can even go inside the belly of the Great Buddha.
