Myohon-ji Temple is the oldest of the Nichiren sect temples.
This area was also the location of the residence of the family of Yoshikazu Hiki and is called “Hikigayatsu”.
However, in 1203 the Hiki clan were killed by the Hojo clan who schemed to retain power,
and this incident became known as the “Conspiracy of Yoshikazu Hiki”.
Still a child and living in Kyoto at the time, the sole survivor of this tragedy, Yoshimoto Hiki
returned to Kamakura where he met Buddhist Priest, Nichiren.
It is said that he gifted his own residence to Nichiren believing him to be the only one to
pray for the happiness of his family in the afterlife, founding Myohon-ji.
In spring the grounds come alive with cherry blossoms and flowering crab apple,
and the colors of the maple and ginkgo trees in autumn.
