From the entrance in the rock face, pass through a tunnel into the other-worldly atmosphere of
Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine, also known as Zeniarai Benten.
This is where the shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo, came to pray for the world’s salvation after the goddess, Ugafukujin,
appeared to him in a dream on the day of the Snake in the month of the Snake in the Year of the Snake(1185) and told him,
‘In a valley to the northwest, there is a miraculous spring that gushes out of the rocks.
Go there and worship (Shinto) kami and (Buddhist) hotoke, and peace will come to the country.’
It is said that, if you place your money in a basket,
which is available, along with incense, from the shrine office inside the shrine grounds for a small fee,
and wash it in the Zeniarai-mizu, or “money-washing spring” in the rear shrine, your monetary fortunes will multiply.
*Using the money you have washed at the shrine for meaningful purposes will apparently increase its power.
